Making Healthy Chocolate At Home

So, if you are looking to eat more sugar-free, then making your own homemade chocolate is seriously going to delight you. It's made with wholefood ingredients that are nutritious and delicious when combined together. In fact, this Nutritionist-approved recipe has many health benefits while at the same time, allowing you to indulge in a divine chocolate treat!

Sweetness Without The Crash

All of my sugar-free chocolate recipes use all-natural sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit, to provide a nutritious sweetness without raising blood sugar levels or causing the energy crashes associated with refined sugar. It's the perfect sugar-free option for diabetics like myself, those with PCOS and insulin resistance, or for people watching their weight.

Superfood Raw Cacao

Raw cacao isn't just delicious, it's a nutritional powerhouse! It's made from the cocoa bean, and harvests the healthiest part of the bean. Raw cacao is loaded with antioxidants, magnesium, and mood-boosting compounds, making it a beneficial ingredient in baking, smoothies, or chia puddings.

The Benefits For Women

While I am on the subject of raw cacao, you might be surprised to learn it is a rich source of iron, which can be especially beneficial for women during menstruation, perimenopause, and menopause. The natural magnesium also found in raw cacao can help reduce mood swings and PMS symptoms, relax your nervous system, and has a subtle, calming effect.

Easy & Versatile

The beauty of this sugar-free chocolate recipe is it's simplicity. With just a few wholesome ingredients and minimal prep time, you can have delicious, healthy chocolate ready in no time. Plus, making it at home allows you to control all the ingredients, ensuring you're getting the most nutrition per serving with less sugar and that you are sticking to your health goals.

Dairy-free & Plantbased

This chocolate recipe is not only sugar-free, but it is also suitable for those with food allergies who are on a diary-free diet, and for those who prefer to eat plantbased. Made with non-dairy ingredients, you won't believe how delicious dairy-free chocolate truly can taste until you try it.

The Best Homemade Chocolate Biscuits

Healthy Ingredients & Sugar-free

This chocolate dessert recipe is so simple, I promise you you'll want to make it every week. Since it is totally sugar-free, you can enjoy it whether you are keto, low carb or diabetic. Chocolate dessert biscuits are so easy to make with a variety of toppings from wholefood ingredients from fresh or dried fruit, crushed nuts and seeds, crumbled rice or quinoa cakes, or toasted oats. The combinations you can create are limitless!

Key Ingredients Used

My healthy chocolate recipe contains no sugar making it perfectly safe for diabetics and those on a low carb menu to rebalance body weight. And the best part is, you'll only need 4 simple ingredients with toppings optional. The following ingredients are easy to find, and affordable. In fact, you may already have them sitting your kitchen pantry as we speak, and they are:

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is the primary ingredient and solidifies into a hard bar. This oil is nutrient-rich and contains medium-chain fatty acids that can stimulate fat loss and boost the metabolism. While coconut oil is densely nutritious, it is also high in saturated fats. Be choosey when you use it as it is not an every day cooking oil for those with cholesterol issues. I generally use Aldi's Oh So Natural or Chef's Choice Certified Organic, two clean brands and staples in my clean eating kitchen.

Raw Cacao Powder

Raw cacao is a popular superfood and is chocolate at its purest, healthiest form. The powder is made from the cacao pod right from the bean itself. Raw cacao is usually unroasted and relatively unprocessed which keeps most of the nutritional value intact. The powder is a super rich source of antioxidants, iron, calcium and is high in magnesium. Try a brands like Chef's Choice Raw Organic Cacao or Oh So Natural Raw Cacao by Aldi, and always look for an organically sourced product whenever possible.

Stevia Sweetener

Stevia is a natural sugar substitute made from the leaves of the stevia plant, Stevia rebaudiana. It is a much sweeter alternative to traditional table sugar, but without any of the associated carbohydrates, calories, or artificial ingredients. In fact, it is estimated to be up to 300 times sweeter than table sugar. Stevia is a great option for those looking for a natural, low-calorie sweetener. Sweet Leaf Stevia and Lakanto’s Monk Fruit are two clean brands to consider with all natural ingredients.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract is used in this recipe to help flavour the raw cacao, and creates a delicious dessert-like flavour similar to store-bought chocolate.

Roasted Coconut Flakes, Seeds, & Rock Salt

These are just some of my go-to toppings to sprinkle over the top when the chocolate is still wet before freezing. You can use crushed nuts, all kinds of activated seeds, dried or candies fruit, and even edible flower petals.

Combining these simple ingredients makes a surprisingly delicious chocolate biscuit recipe suitable for those who love chocolate but still want to rebalance body weight with healthier food options. I swear once you try the recipe, you'll quickly become as hooked as my family and friends!

You won't believe just how easy and tasty these homemade chocolate biscuits are until you make them for yourself. It's become a tried and true staple recipe in my kitchen especially around the holidays for gift giving. Grab your mixing bowls and let's make some healthy chocolate together!

Healthy Homemade Chocolate Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 1 cup coconut oil, organic

  • 3 tbsp raw cacao powder, organic

  • 3 drops stevia liquid or 1-2 tsp of your favourite sweetener

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • OPTIONAL: coconut flakes, edible petals, nuts, seeds etc for toppings

Method

Add the coconut oil to a microwavable bowl or small sauce pan. Heat enough to melt the oil into a liquid, usually 30-60 seconds in the microwave or 2-3 minutes on the stove. Once melted, stir in all the remaining ingredients (except toppings). Spoon a small amount of the mixture onto a lined baking tray and top with your favourite toppings such as dried fruit, nuts, seeds or a drizzle of nut butter. Freeze for 1 hour to harden, then enjoy.

Recipe Note

WARNING: just because this recipe is "healthy" and sugar-free, doesn't mean you can go crazy on serving portions. One or two bite-sized pieces is a proper portion, although I will warn you, this recipe it so good it may be a struggle just to stick to only small piece!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sugar-free chocolate really better for you?

Yes, especially when you make it yourself from clean, whole ingredients. Most store-bought sugar-free options use fillers or artificial sweeteners that can still spike blood sugar or disrupt hormones, gut health and cause headaches. Homemade versions let you stay in control of what goes in your body, and what stays out.

Can I use honey or maple syrup instead of stevia?

While they’re more natural, honey and maple syrup still contain raw sugar. If you’re following a strict no-sugar diet, go for monk fruit, stevia, or erythritol. I always recommend starting with small amounts and taste-testing as you go to find which one works best for you.

Will this coconut oil-based chocolate harden like regular chocolate?

Yes, but it does need to be kept cool. If you use coconut oil or cacao butter and store it in the fridge, it firms up beautifully. I like to keep mine in the freezer for a chilled chocolate bite now and again, but the fridge is just fine. Store the chocolate biscuits in a sealed container so they don't absorb any ridge smells and keep as fresh as possible.

How long does homemade chocolate last?

Stored in an airtight jar in the fridge, the homemade biscuits should last about 7–10 days. You can also freeze portions if you’re meal-prepping or want to avoid late-night temptation.

Can I eat sugar-free chocolate biscuits on a weight loss plan?

Absolutely, if you use this recipe. When made correctly, sugar-free chocolate is a smart treat that fits into balanced, low-sugar or even keto-friendly plans. Just portion it out mindfully, and use them when you feel temptation beckon.

Nutritionist Note

Making your own healthy chocolates at home allows you to choose high-quality ingredients and avoid unwanted additives or hidden sugars often found in commercially produced chocolate. While this sugar-free biscuit recipe is healthier than store-bought chocolates, it's still important to be mindful of your consumption. Chocolate, even the healthy versions, contain calories and fat that can quickly add up. Enjoy a sensible serving to satisfy your sweet tooth without going overboard.
