What Is The Main Difference Between Mindful Eating & Intuitive Eating?

Today I am unpacking more ways to ditch dieting and approach a healing and more self-empowering way to build a healthy relationship with food. There are two incredible paths that have gained well-deserved attention that I want to talk about, mindful eating and intuitive eating. While they both share many similarities, each has their own unique qualities that make them a wonderful way to get off the diet hamster wheel.

Grab a herbal tea, prop your feet up and let's unravel the practices and benefits of mindful eating and intuitive eating. In less than 8 minutes you'll put your mug and have two approaches that can truly transformation to your eating habits and overall well-being!!

So, What Is Mindful Eating?

If you haven't yet heard about mindful eating, it's a body-mind loving approach towards food and nourishment rooted in the practice of mindfulness itself. Mindful eating is all about savouring the present moment, engaging your senses around eating, and creating non-judgmental awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations when it comes to food. Mindful eating encourages you to slow down, relish every tasty bite, and build a much deeper appreciation and connection with nourishment and nutrition.

Then, What Is Intuitive Eating?

The transformative power of intuitive eating, can be such a liberating and healing practice when it becomes your every day habit. Intuitive eating is holistic, and means that you adopt an approach to food and nutrition that embraces your relationship with your body. It means that you are more aware and tuned in to listen to your body's gentle cues of hunger, fullness, and satisfaction instead of external rules or restrictions. Intuitive eating celebrates self-care, body kindness, and fully rejects the ideas of diet culture, allowing you to find a balance again, and a more sustainable way to nourish yourself on the daily.

Difference Between Mindful & Intuitive Eating

While mindful eating and intuitive eating share a common goal of cultivating a healthier relationship with food, they offer unique perspectives and applications. Mindful eating is the practice of being fully present during mealtime and food consumption, while intuitive eating focused more on a wider set of principles that influence your overall well-being.

Mindful eating relies on engaging all your five senses and focuses on the eating experience itself. It helps you to tune in to your body's unique and subtle hunger signals, savoring every delicious moment and cultivating a mindful and gratifying eating ritual.

Intuitive eating on the other hand, takes you on a journey beyond the plate. It encourages you to release the shackles of dieting, embrace your body's wisdom, and find pleasure in eating again without guilt or restrictions. By nourishing yourself from a place of self-care and respect, you can make choices that truly support your well-being.

Finding The Right Balance

Balance around food and nutrition centres on the harmonious dance between mindful eating and intuitive eating. The mindfulness cultivated through mindful eating practices enhances your ability to listen to your body's cues, making intuitive eating a natural and joyful experience. As you become more attuned to your body's needs, you can make choices that bring you satisfaction and nourishment, promoting a balanced and positive approach to food.

So, if you've been stuck on the diet roller coaster for more years than you care to admit, consider adopting the habits of mindfulness and intuitive eating instead. Embark on a soulful journey where mindful eating and intuitive eating intertwine to transform your relationship with food.

By engaging in mindful eating practices, you'll become fully present and engaged during meals, creating a special connection with your nourishment. Intuitive eating, with its emphasis on self-care and body respect, will guide you towards making choices that truly support your overall well-being.

Embrace the application of both approaches as you discover the joy, satisfaction, and freedom that come with nurturing yourself. As a Nutritionist, I believe that food is a celebration of nourishment, a way to practice self-love, self-care and body kindness. So rather than harm your body by dieting, infuse your life with mindful and intuitive eating instead, and let the healing begin!
