Collagen is an essential protein responsible for healthy joints and your skin elasticity. It's found in the make up of your bones, muscles, and blood, comprising three quarters of your skin and a third of the protein in your body. As you age, your existing collagen breaks down, and it gets harder for your body to produce so supplementation becomes essential. We need a constant supply from natural food sources to look and feel out very best.

Overnight Oats & Chia Pudding Recipe

This is one of the best breakfast recipes to help you bust through those mid-morning sugar cravings because oats and chia seeds are both naturally high in dietary fibre. The fibre found in these two ingredients will help to keep you feeling full and satisfied over more traditional cereal type breakfast options.

Basic Ingredients

  • 1 cup vegan yoghurt such as coconut or soy

  • 3 tbsp blueberry compote, homemade

  • 3 tbsp rolled oats, high in fibre

  • 2 tsp collagen like REPAIR by The Gut Co

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (if yoghurt is plain)

  • 2 tsp chia seeds, high in fibre

Method

Add the ingredients to a mason jar and stir well to combine. I like to add the blueberry compote last as a swirl, but you can mix it in as per your personal preference. Twist on the mason jar's lid and store in the fridge overnight or for a minimum of 2-3 hours to set. To serve, eat right from the jar! These make a great packable breakfast, lunch or snack (if you halve the portion). Enjoy with a few berries, tablespoon of granola over the top, so yummy and filling!!

Benefits of Collagen

I am always testing out new wholefood and botanically based supplements that can support an otherwise healthy diet and lifestyle. So when I was asked my thoughts on REPAIR (pictured) it quickly got my tick of approval… I loved that @thegut.co REPAIR is a naturopathically formulated superfood powder. It has been thoughtfully crafted to deliver hydrolysed collagen and supply antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, and Zinc which are are all essential in supporting natural collagen production in the body.

Something else I was impressed by is it that REPAIR is FODMAP and safe for those with gut issues or people with IBS. It has a subtle fruity flavour that is tasty straight up over ice or in smoothies, and lends itself well to being used in raw food desserts, overnight oats or chia pudding. Here's a few lovely ways to use your collagen supplements in wholefood meals:

Glowing Skin Collagen Booster Smoothie

Using the above collagen or your own favourite brand, try adding a scoop to a recipe infused with naturally beneficial ingredients that help your body better utilise and produce more collagen. A simple one to get started with is based on high vitamin C and antioxidant content:

Collagen Booster Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 250ml plantbased milk, I like oat or almond for this

  • 1/2 banana, frozen to give this a creamy texture

  • 1/2 cup mixed berries, high in antioxidants

  • 2 guava fruits* or substitute with 1/2 orange, juice and pulp

  • 1 scoop collagen like REPAIR by The Gut Co

  • 1/2 lemon, juice and pulp

  • 2 tbsp chia seeds, high in fibre and omega-3s

*If you cannot find the raw, fresh fruit, do not use the juice it is usually very high in sugar and the dietary fibre removed during processing. Substitute with half an orange.

Method

Blend everything together and serve over ice with a wide smoothie straw. If its too thick, spoon into a small bowl and enjoy like soft-service ice cream with a handful of homemade granola over the top.

Morning Collagen Tonic

Try this super simple tonic on an empty tummy first thing in the morning. This is when your body is most receptive to nutrients and digestion is peaked for the day ahead.

Morning Tonic Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 organic lemon, whole including rind

  • 1/2 English cucumber, skin off

  • 1 large handful Italian (flat leaf) parsley, organic

  • 2 green apples, skin off if not organic

  • 1 scoop of REPAIR or your choice of collagen powder

Method

Push the ingredients through a high-powered juicer and then stir in your collagen powder. Blend well and pour over ice. Use a straw to enjoy as the acidity from the fruits can be damaging to tooth dentin.

Straight Up Morning Martini

Yeah nah, I am not advocating alcohol in the morning, but I am suggesting that you prepare your collagen powder in ice water, shake well and get a little fancy with it in a martini glass. Add edible flowers, a citrus ring, wedge of watermelon or a strawberry, because why not! Three cheers to good health and your glowing skin...

I'd love to know if you make these and what combinations you come up with. Tell me in the comments or hit the chat button and share your photos.
