The Importance of Healthy Habits
The activities you rinse and repeat each day become the lifestyle habits that can either build or detract from good health and your happiness. It is those small, consistent changes that you make every day that can make all the difference when it comes to reaching your goals.
By the end of January, this is when nee health habits can suddenly begin to feel more like work and less like motivation-fuelled fun. In fact, over 80% of people who made resolutions on New Year's Ever, fail.
Yep, even me! This is why I stopped making them and tried something different...
Let's be honest, keeping resolutions can be hard, but making habits stick can feel even harder especially when your Life is already chockablock with balancing motherhood, family and a social life plus your work commitments. It's easy to fall back into the same old routines and bad habits, and just chuck the idea of ever fitting into your favourite sundress or having that "me time" mediation session each morning. So it's important to make your goals smaller, bite-sized so that they are easier to attain and incorporate them to the pace of your current lifestyle. This way, you'll have a better chance of making goals that stick and form habits that will actually last and last.
Shhhh, How To Make Healthy Habits Stick
Healthy habits can be difficult to maintain when motivation wans and Life gets hectic, but with a few simple steps, you can make them easier to stick with not just in January but all year. Here are some tips for keeping your resolutions and making healthy habits stick:
Start Small... Micro Small!
When it comes to making healthy habits stick, it’s best to start small--micro small. When goals are too big of an ask, its easy to get discouraged that I'm all about the opposite; I want to empower you to succeed. So make your goals more manageable by first reducing them to small, micro steps, and second by not adding anything more until you master those first steps.
This might look like eating one additional serving of fruits or vegetables each day to clean up your diet, or going walks after dinner to help with sleep and digestion. Then, once that habit is established, you can add on more.
Set a timeline
Setting a timeline for the new healthy habits to help you track your progress. For example, if you commit to eating one extra serving of high fibre fruits or veggies each day for the next month, give yourself 30 days to achieve this. A time frame in which to see the habit through is so important, even if its only to try it on for a few days. In fact, that is a very effeceint way to get started if you are already feeling on overload and frazzled (aren't most of us mums?)
Track your progress
Tracking your progress is an effective way to motivate yourself and stay on track with your goals. Whether you use a paper planner or an app, make sure to check in regularly and note your successes and struggles.
Get support
It can be helpful to find friends or family members who are trying to make similar healthy changes. Ask them to join you on your journey and provide you with accountability.
Re-evaluate and adjust your goals
Making new goals and adjustments as necessary is key to keeping your healthy habits in check. As you progress, take the time to re-evaluate and make adjustments as needed.
The Bottom Line
Making healthy habits stick is not easy, but with the right tools and strategies, it can be done. Start small, set a timeline, track your progress, get support, and re-evaluate and adjust your goals as needed to reach your healthy goals. With patience and dedication, you'll be able to make healthy eating habits stick, achieving your goals in no time. It's never too late to make new goals - take the first step today and start living a healthier life!
