Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary is best known as a culinary herb used in cooking, but it has also been used for healing in functional medicine and holistic therapies. Similar to oils like Peppermint (also used to promote hair growth), Rosemary Oil helps to strengthen circulation. As a result, its to prevent hair follicles from being starved of blood supply, dying off, and leading to hair loss. The oil also helps to promote nerve growth and has anti-inflammatory properties.

In addition to naturally stimulating hair growth, rosemary essential oil is used to prevent premature greying and dandruff. It may also help dry or itchy scalp.

How To Use

Rosemary Oil is most effective for hair restoration when used consistently for at least 6 months. You can also use the oil as a treatment a minimum of 1 to 2 times per week. The easiest way to use Rosemary Oil is to try a shampoo with a high concentration of the essential oil. Alternatively, you can make a Rosemary Oil infused shampoo at home by adding 10-12 drops of the essential oil to your favourite shampoo bottle.

Applying Rosemary Oil to the scalp, and wrapping your head with a warm towel for a hair and scalp treatment can enhance its effects. To make a Rosemary Oil tonic, dilute a drop or two of Rosemary Oil in a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond, Fractionated Coconut or Jojoba and then massage into the scalp and leave overnight.

Realistically, Rosemary Oil can take several months to work, so don't expect overnight results. Rosemary is most effective for hair restoration when used consistently for at least 6 months.

Other Essential Oils For Naturally Gorgeous Hair

Lavender Oil

Lavender Oil can also help improve hair health and speed up hair growth. The popular oil has been known to help generate the growth of cells and reduce stress. Researchers on one animal study found that this oil was able to generate faster hair growth in mice. It also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, which can improve your scalp health.

HOW TO USE: Mix several drops of Lavender Oil into 3 tablespoons of carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut, and apply it directly to your scalp. Leave it in for at least 10 minutes before washing it out and shampooing as you normally would. You can do this several times per week instead of using Rosemary; just one or the other.

Peppermint Oil is so refreshing and gives a cold, tingling feeling while increasing circulation to the area where it is applied. Improving circulation can help promote your hair growth during the anagen (or growing) phase. It works to increase the number of follicles, follicle depth, and overall hair growth giving you healthier, stronger hair strands.

HOW TO USE: Mix 2 drops of Peppermint Oil with the carrier oil of your choice. I favour Fractionated Coconut for this. Massage the blended oil directly onto your scalp, and leave on for up to 5 minutes before washing out thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner. You can try this a few times per week instead of using Rosemary or the other suggestions; just one or the other.

Cedarwood Oil

Cedarwood Oil helps to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss by balancing the oil-producing glands of the scalp. This essential oil also contains natural antifungal and antibacterial properties, which can treat different conditions that may contribute to dandruff or greasy hair. A mixture of Lavender Oil and Rosemary Oil, Cedarwood Oil has also been found to help reduce hair loss in those with Alopecia Areata.

HOW TO USE: Mix a few drops of Cedarwood Oil with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil of your choice. Sweet Almond, Coconut and Jojoba all work well for this. Massage the blended oils into your scalp, and leave it on for up to 10 minutes before rinsing. Cedarwood Oil can sometimes be hard to find, I grab mine from ECO Modern Essentials, click here.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage is a renowned antidote to mild depression, anxiety and stress. Its been used to also improve hair health. Clary Sage Oil contains the same linalyl acetate that helps to make Lavender Oil so effective in increasing hair growth. Using Clary Sage Oil can naturally help improve your hair strength, in addition to increasing hair growth, making hair more difficult to break.

HOW TO USE: Blended 2-3 drops of Clary Sage Oil with your favourite hair conditioner, or try it with blended with 1 tablespoon of a pure carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut. If you use this mixture daily, be sure to rinse after 2 minutes. If using it once or twice per week, leave it on for 10 minutes. Again, choose one remedy and use consistently for several weeks rather than jumping back and for the between the above recipes.

Rose Oil

Rose Oil to the rescue! This popular oil contains fatty acids, lycopene, and vitamin C making it an excellent oil treatment for your skin, scalp and hair. Simply massaging the pure oil into the scalp skin to make your hair follicles grow stronger and hold more firmly to the roots. The antiseptic properties of Rose Oil can also treat the natural build up of scalp bacteria and dirt from styling products.

HOW TO USE: add up to 5 drops in a dispersant such as oil or to the bath. Mix 1 drop of chosen essential oil with 5ml carrier oil and apply to wrists, chest or back of the neck. As a compress, add 2 drops oil to a bowl of water.

Essential oils can help provide natural ways to ways to improve the quality and health of your hair, skin and scalp. I highly recommended giving a few of these remedies a go adn see what result you personally get from regular use. Just be sure to do a test patch with any new essential oils, especially when you first start using them. Less is always more, and watch out for any adverse reactions. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use Rosemary oil unless under a Doctor's supervision.
